FORT HOOD, Texas - In advance of its change of command Oct. 14, First Army Division West hosted command teams and family readiness group leaders in parallel workshops Oct. 12-13.
Maj. Gen. Charles A. Anderson who would relinquish command during the change of command used the workshop to remind many of the participants of the Division’s vision and imperatives which were developed by the command teams and FRG leaders at a similar workshop at the beginning of his command during 2009.
The vision as developed at that conference states "Division West is a transformed, adaptive, premier training organization that provides combat-ready forces for deployment to any theater of operations."
The imperatives developed were:
-
Every Soldier is a competent, fit and professional trainer
-
Division West is composed of agile, adaptive leaders and units
-
Our training is tough, relevant, realistic, safe and performed to the Army standard
-
We sustain our Soldiers, Civilians, and Families.
Maj. Gen. Perry L. Wiggins opened the second day of the conference by sharing some of his philosophy and noting his experiences working with the reserve component as the Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army North which works homeland security missions.
The first day for command teams also included blocks of instruction on resiliency and Comprehensive Soldier Fitness, best practices for executing culminating training events and mission rehearsal exercises, future mobilization load and missions, command maintenance and supply, resourcing, and personnel projections.
Day two included policy briefs, knowledge management, risk reduction, suicide prevention, motorcycle safety, demobilization best practices, and a classified brief covering operations, tactics and procedures from theaters the division supports.
FRG leaders shared the opening briefs with Anderson and Wiggins as well as the blocks on resiliency and Comprehensive Soldier Fitness. Other courses for FRG leaders included team building training, continuity book creation, family advocacy, care team training, military family life consultants, and a day in the life of a Family Readiness Support Advisor.
With physical fitness a training focus of the division, morning PT included a functional fitness session on Oct. 12 and Anderson’s final division run on Oct. 13.
Anderson was honored by the division as well as numerous community leaders from Central Texas and senior Army leaders at a retirement dinner the evening of Oct. 13.
