FORT HOOD, Texas - First Army Division West brigade commanders and other senior leaders gathered to discuss continued refinement of Soldier care and training during a two-day commander’s conference beginning Dec. 17.
The focus of the conference was mission, people and teamwork, said Division West commanding general, Maj. Gen. Charles Anderson. “That’s been the focus I’ve been pushing the last 60 days [since becoming head of the division].”
Division West trains and validates mobilized Army Reserve and Army National Guard units for deployment to combat or other contingency operations and, as directed, also trains units of the active Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and United States partner nations. Since October 2007, Division West has mobilized more than 1,500 units and more than 85,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines.
In fiscal year 2009, Division West trained nearly 50,000 troops. Although the number of troops now mobilizing for missions in Iraq is getting smaller, Anderson said, the number preparing to go to Afghanistan is growing.
Division West will continue training those troops, but its training brigade locations are being consolidated, a process that is scheduled to be completed in 2011. “By the end of fiscal year 2011, we’ll be down to three locations from six,” Anderson said. “That makes so much sense, and it’s going to make life so much easier for Division West.”
Two of Division West’s seven subordinate training brigades – the 120th Infantry Brigade and 166th Aviation Brigade – are currently located at Fort Hood. A third – the 479th Field Artillery Brigade – is scheduled to move to Fort Hood from Fort Sill, Okla., next summer.
The division’s remaining brigades are the 181st Infantry Brigade at Fort McCoy, Wisc., which will join the 191st Infantry Brigade at Fort Lewis, Wash., and the 402nd Field Artillery Brigade at Travis Air Force Base, Calif., which will join the 5th Armored Brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas. All together, Division West’s seven brigades have a total of 51 battalions located throughout the western United States from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean.
