FORT SILL, Okla. - First Army Division West's 479th Field Artillery Brigade hosted more than 45 senior leaders of the Northwest Area Command Royal Saudi Land Forces for a military decision making process seminar Jan. 24 through Feb. 1.

The event was intended to establish a foundation for the Saudi Arabian unit's understanding of the seven steps and associated tasks of MDMP.

"This training is in preparation for one of their command post exercises that will lead up to the Earnest Leader exercise, which will take place in April this year," said Maj. Gen. Charles A. Anderson, Division West commanding general. "The Royal Saudi Land Forces have observed this process, and what they want to do is go through the necessary training to learn as much as they can about this process that will help them produce their order for the command post exercise coming up."

The Royal Saudi Soldiers were briefed in the morning for about an hour and then broke into staff sections to work through practical exercises.

"We have a wide variety of Soldiers from a wide spectrum of experiences and operational backgrounds that span from engineer, field artillery, infantry and armor, as well as those in the logistics fields, who are here to facilitate [the Royal Saudi Land Forces] in the development of their [operations] order," said Col. Bill Turner, commander of the 479th and exercise director.

The Saudi and U.S. Soldiers - including expert trainers from Division West Headquarters at Fort Hood, Texas - worked together through daily practical exercises and closed each day with an applicable product, including warning orders, mission analysis briefs and courses of action.

During the MDMP seminar, U.S. and Saudi Soldiers built friendships that enabled them to train hard and learn from one another.

It was important to be here to develop a one-on-one working relationship, said Brig. Gen. Ahmed A. Al-Shehri, Field Artillery Brigade deputy commander of Northwest Area Command Royal Saudi Land Forces. "When we break down into our small shops, you see Saudi and American officers sitting together exchanging ideas," he said.

The seminar was also beneficial for the American Soldiers.

"It's a great opportunity for our Soldiers - not only 479th Soldiers, but all across Division West - to get exposed to a different culture's perspective on the military decision making process as they plan different operations," Turner said.

The 479th Field Artillery Brigade, although currently located at Fort Sill, Okla., is scheduled to move to Fort Hood and begin training operations there this summer.

Greetings.

If convenient, kindly inform the 479th FAB leadership that I would be pleased to provide, as a professional courtesy to all, some English-Arabic PPT classes on the MDMP.

That [MDMP] was one of the subjects I taught as part of a "battle staff training" provided to the staffs of units of the Saudi Arabian National Guard (SANG), and that class matches what RSLF teaches its resident courses on the subject.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
