RHODE ISLAND - Chief Warrant Officer Four Steven Moy retired this month after over thirty-four years of exceptional military service. CW 4 Moy served his country in both peacetime and during war. He enlisted in the Army in 1967 and attended Warrant Officer training and Flight School at Fort Rucker, Alabama. After graduation, he was sent to the Republic of Vietnam with the 71st Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade. He went on to fly 928 combat hours in a UH-1 Huey from August 1968 to August 1969. For his heroism, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After his service in Vietnam, CW4 Moy continued to serve with distinction in the Army.

In 1980 CW4 Moy joined the Rhode Island Army National Guard. In his 28 years with the Rhode Island Army National Guard, CW4 Moy performed exceptionally well in any position taken.   As an AH-1 instructor pilot, CW4 Moy trained long and hard with junior aviators to ensure they were battle-ready. CW4 Moy continued to train junior aviators through many aviation conversions and mission changes to include modernizing Rhode Island Aviation into the significant and ready force it is today.

He successfully set the conditions for accomplishment and oversaw the first deployment of Co A. 1-126th (CSAB) to Honduras in support of Operation New Horizons 2004. CW4 Moy’s knowledge and aviation proficiency was once again called into play for Rhode Island Army Aviation’s first combat deployment. Mr. Moy served as the company operations officer maximizing Co. A’s combat strength and ensured unit success.

Chief Moy’s final assignment was supervisory Instructor Pilot for Co A. 1-126th (GSAB).  CW4 Moy has over 4600 flight hours, of which 1320 were flown in combat.  He is qualified in the TH-55, UH-1, AH-1 and the UH-60.  He selflessly served in two overseas-armed conflicts, Vietnam and Iraq, and multiple training deployments.

CW4 Moy epitomizes the American Fighting Soldier, Officer and Aviator. The Rhode Island National Guard is certainly a little poorer as a true comrade and Army Aviator has flown his last flight.
