FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. - The Pennsylvania National Guard held a Ten Year Anniversary Celebration for managing programs at Fort Indiantown Gap here Saturday.
"Today is an anniversary and a celebration of the fact that the National Guard has taken over this installation," said Col. Robert Hodgson, former FTIG post commander.
"We in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard like to think that the National Guard taking over here was the best thing that ever happened to Fort Indiantown Gap," said Maj. General Jessica Wright, the Adjundant General of the Pa. National Guard.
It looks better now, said Wright. We're training more people because the facilities and the training capabilities are better.
"This is just a celebration of all those great things that are here for soldiers to train with as they get ready and prepared to go to war and defend the country," said Wright.
The celebration kicked off with guest speakers, the Scotland School Honor Guard and an artillery salute at the opening ceremony.
The event continued with information booths including the Pennsylvania Department of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Tri-Care, Employee Support of the Guard and Reserve and Army National Guard Education Center.
"We want to show the public what we've done and how well we're doing," said Wright. "We're good neighbors. We want to show them what kind of training goes on here."
Military equipment displays were scattered throughout the event with soldiers standing by to give tours and provide information.
"We brought all of the vehicles that the Pa. National Guard operates," said Wright. "The public is allowed to come in and explore the vehicles, talk to soldiers and airmen that are here and get a feel for what we do."
To conclude the event, aircraft flyovers were conducted over for spectators to watch.
"It's important because we need to let the public know what we do here," said Wright. "They come to truly show their appreciation for us."
The Ten Year Anniversary Celebration was noted as, "A Decade of Excellence and Service to Community, Commonwealth and Country."
"We're in the middle of a war and no matter how you feel about the war, the American public is very appreciative of the soldiers and airmen and what they do and the sacrifice they give to the nation," said Wright.
