The Airmen are deployed from Barksdale Air Force Base, La., in support of U.S. Pacific Command's Continuous Bomber Presence in the Asia-Pacific Region. Capt. Jeremy Holt, 96th EBS B-52 Stratofortress aircraft commander, spearheaded the project to clean up the parking lot and trail leading to the cave, as well as the cave itself. "Almost every weekend someone from our squadron has been out here swimming or exploring the inside of the cave," Captain Holt said. "Because of its short drive from base and its easy access by car, the cave has become an integral part in the moral of our squadron." When the Airmen visit the cave, they have noticed that a lot of trash had accumulated in the cave and surrounding area. "We've been out here before and noticed that it gets used a lot," said 1st Lt. Sean Cutler, 96th EBS B-52 Stratofortress pilot. "We noticed it was a little dirty from litter in the area, so we thought we'd come out and clean up the area as a way to give back to the community." The Airmen as a whole felt it was important to clean up the cave as a way to give back to a supportive community. "It's important for the cleanup to take place because the local community around here has supported not only our squadron, but Andersen AFB so much, especially during the time that I've been out here," said 1st Lt. Ryan Egan, 96th EBS B-52 Stratofortress copilot "They've sponsored us during events, and support us in what we are doing here. This is a way for us to say thanks to the community." The 96th EBS is scheduled to redeploy to Barksdale AFB, once their sister unit, the 20th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron arrives to continue support of U.S. PACOM's Continues Bomber Presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
