GATESVILLE, Texas — Sixth graders at Gatesville Intermediate School learned the most important key to having a successful military career — discipline.

The students heard this message along with tips to develop careers in 15 other career fields during Career Day Nov. 19.

Three Soldiers in the 120th Infantry Brigade (Training Support), including the unit’s public affairs officer, equal opportunity officer and a transportation officer, participated in their adopted school’s day in order to share what they have learned in their combined 40 years of military service.

“Discipline is the foundation of everything we do in the Army," said Sgt. 1st Class Darin Morgan of the 120th Inf. Bde., to each group of 20 children during the presentations. "Discipline will also help you complete anything you want to do in your life.”

Morgan works as the unit’s equal opportunity officer, but the children seemed more interested in hearing about his previous job in the 82nd Airborne Division as a field artilleryman and how he earned the row of badges he wore on his uniform.

The Soldiers spoke to nearly 60 children who got to choose their top three career choices and the military was one of the most popular choices, said Becky Coward, school counselor.

“Students need to have a better understanding of how their interest can lead to a career. Those same interests will help them determine which classes they will take as early as seventh grade,” she said.

Morgan said, “It is important to reach out to the youth in the community to let them know what Soldiers do. I especially thought it was important to let them know what I do as an EO officer and that it is important to treat each other with dignity and respect. Developing dignity and respect combined with discipline has life-long benefits.”
