Military Asbestos Exposures

In recent years, there has been a rising incidence of mesothelioma, an asbestos cancer, among current and former members of the armed forces in the United States. Asbestos? Many believe asbestos to be a problem of the past. And while indeed the majority of asbestos products were banned by the Consumer Product Safety Commission in the late 1970's, exposures from many years ago are just now beginning to cause serious health consequences, including among veterans and military service men and women.

Why does asbestos exposure affect members of the armed services and veterans?

Asbestos was used primarily as an insulation material, but was also very fire-retardant and resistant to temperature transfer. These are all qualities that are common within the military infrastructure, given that many military installations are designed for combat situations. The most common exposures occurred aboard naval vessels and naval shipyards. Asbestos was used to line piping, electrical fixtures, and hull constructions in naval vessels. Many of these fixtures still exist or existed long after asbestos was banned.

As asbestos fixtures become older they become more unstable and more hazardous. Technicians who worked with any of the above fixtures, aboard naval vessels or elsewhere in military installations, likely encountered asbestos on numerous occasions. When these materials are repaired or replaced it is likely they will be disturbed to the point where they are hazardous. As asbestos fibers are disturbed they are easily released into the air where they are available to inhale.

What are some possible effects of adverse asbestos exposure?

Health effects related to inhaled asbestos fiber can range from minor respiratory malfunction to the asbestos cancer, mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer that originates in the lining of the lungs. Asbestos fibers are durable and uniquely shaped. Their durability and shape allow for them to easily lodge in the body’s inner tissue and not be broken down by the body’s normal defense mechanisms. Those who believe they may have been exposed to asbestos should consult with their physician immediately about their exposure history. Doctors will be able to alert those at risk of possible indications of an adverse exposure. Early identifications of symptoms can go a long way in the availability of certain treatment options for mesothelioma and other conditions.

my papa is dieing from the asbestosis poisoning he is a vet of Korea, Vietnam, and The Gulf War. He retired from the military after serving most of his life now he has to fight for medical care. We have no idea how much time is left but every day he has left is a blessing. the VA deny his claims for most of his treatment luckily he has private insurance paying for it. I hope those with it can get treatment and they can find a way to stop this exposure!
