NUMANIYAH, Iraq - The last of nine National Police brigades graduated from a four-week specialized training course Nov. 4, completing an important phase in their development process.
More than 1,800 members from the Fifth Brigade, Second Division National Police Division "Shurtas" marched in formation in new blue uniforms, signifying their completion of the specialized course which covered everything from basic weapon handling and search operations to detainee handling.
Brig. Gen. James Yarbrough, Iraq Assistance Group Commanding General, Brig. Gen. David Phillips, Deputy CG of the Coalition Police Authority Transition Team, Maj. Gen. Hussein Jasim Muhammad Mus al Awadi, NP Headquarters Division Commandant, and Brig. Gen. Sabbar Abbas Ubeid, the Numaniyah National Police Academy MOI Liaison, were in attendance to congratulate the graduates.
According to Maj. Gen. Hussein, this training was important to the professional development of the NP. The general briefly recounted the rich history of the 2-5, one of the most experienced Iraqi brigades, and emphasized the importance of this training in the graduates' professional development. Hussein congratulated the graduates on their accomplishment and encouraged them "to execute the law and enforce the law."
The more than 40 members of the National Police Transition Team, who not only serve as NP advisors, but who also teach the trainees tactical procedures during the course, shared in the pride of graduation day During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Matthew Green, 5-2 NPTT team leader, applauded the brigade for their hard work.
"A few short weeks ago, the units of the Fifth National Police, the Sword Brigade, were scattered across Baghdad," Green said. "They are veterans of almost two years of campaigning, from Fallujah to the nation's capital. But every organization can always be improved. So the sword brigade was brought together for the first time in almost a year to train here in Numaniyah."
"Today the fifth brigade, united and well trained, will graduate and return triumphant to Baghdad, ready to once again take up arms against Iraq's enemies.
"This graduation is symbolic of the exceptional progress the NP has made over the past year," said General Yarbrough. "Every brigade that trained here has graduated much more capable then when they began their training."
In Baghdad this week, the NP began the next phase of development, a 7-week Carabinieri-like training course at Camp Dublin, facilitated by the NATO-sponsored Italian Carabinieri Team. According to Yarbrough, this NATO training will raise the skills of 11 NP Battalions over the next two years. "This shows the enduring commitment of the coalition, of our partners in NATO, and most importantly, the professionalism of the NP, who are well on their way to becoming the premier law enforcement force in Iraq."
